What is CarbonFoot Interactive Doing to Reduce Waste & Save Energy?
RECYCLING: We recycle everything humanly possible. All of our paper, glass, metal and plastic is separated and picked up for recycling. Paints, batteries and other toxic materials are disposed of through either Home Depot (batteries) or local Toxic Waste Handling Centers. We compost coffee grounds and food.
LIGHTING: All of our light bulbs have been changed to compact fluorescent energy-efficient bulbs (CFLs) which use 65 percent less energy than regular ones. CFLs cost about 30 percent more but last up to 10 times longer. If every American home replaced just one light bulled with a CFL qualified bulled, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy savings, and would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emission of more than 800,000 cars.

ENERGY STAR & EPEAT Gold: We use Energy Star rated office electronics and appliances. We’re using MacBook Pros that are more energy efficient. Plus, the aluminum casing and glass display and mousepads are highly desirable materials for recyclers. The MacBook Pro hard drive spins down automatically when inactive and decides which processor (CPU or GPU) is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The battery can go through more ‘cycles’ of recharging (1,000) .The LED backlit display uses 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. Plus it dims when the room darkens so to sum up our notebooks run on about one-third of the power of a single light bulb. These notebooks are also Energy Star certified by the EPA and received the highest rating by the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool organization that evaluates how recyclable the product is, how much energy it uses, and how it’s designed and manufactured (uses fewer harmful toxins in manufacturing). |
TRANSPORTATION: We encourage staff to make use of bicycles at lunch (provided by CarbonFoot Interactive) to run errands or to head to the nearby restaurants. In fourth quarter 2010, we plan to purchase an additional Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEVs).
RECYCLED PAPER & DIRECT MAIL MATERIALS: We use 100% recycled paper and 50-75% recycled envelopes for mailers.
CERAMIC MUGS: Yes we drink a lot of coffee, but no we don’t use paper cups. Everyone uses their own ceramic mugs or stainless steel containers for coffee, water.
STANDBY HOURS: MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY 9-5: We shut off our computers and lights at night. Did you know 1% of domestic energy use is from electronic equipment like TVs, appliances and computers on standby? And, a PC left on 24 hours/day generates 716kg of CO² a year.
LOCAL & ORGANIC FOOD: We try to eat local and organically grown foods. Vegetables are from the local farmers market, milk from the local dairy. Organic farming keeps chemicals out of the soil and out of our bodies. Organic foods are also produced in accordance with certain production standards. For crops, it means they were grown without the use of conventional pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, human waste or sewage sludge nor processed with with ionizing radiation or food additives. Buying organic reduces pesticide exposure to the land, farmers, harvesters , and our families. For animals, it means they were reared without the routine use of antibiotics or growth hormones. In most countries, organic product must not be genetically modified (though CarbonFoot does not harbor disdain for such foods and regularly consumes them). Free range chickens and other animals are permitted to roam freely instead of being contained. The free-range principle is to allow the animals to live out their instinctual behaviors in a reasonably natural way.
